Heads up if you're near the coast — the Philippines is on tsunami alert after a massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake rocked Russia’s far east on Wednesday, July 30. Phivolcs says tsunami waves less than 1 meter high might reach several parts of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
When Will It Hit?
Tsunami waves could arrive anytime between 1:20 PM and 2:40 PM today (Manila time), according to Phivolcs. And these first waves? They might not be the biggest. The agency warns that the movement of the sea could continue for hours, so better play it safe.
Who’s Affected?
Here are the 22 provinces that should be on alert:
-
Luzon: Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes
-
Visayas: Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte
-
Mindanao: Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, Davao de Oro
Basically, if your area faces the Pacific, stay alert.
What Should You Do?
Phivolcs is telling people in these provinces to stay away from beaches and coastal areas. If your house is near the shoreline, move inland — don’t risk it.
Boat owners? Tie your boats securely or move them to deeper waters. If you’re already out at sea, stay offshore until you get the all-clear.
