American culture sometimes appears to be quite contemporary and rapidly changing; however, a lot of it was established a long time ago, before the present. Some specific habits, values, and even ways of reacting did not emerge overnight. They were very much influenced by the past events that are rarely discussed in classrooms or the media. Gradually, these times became distant to the people's memory, but, at the same time, they still influenced the people's conduct. What is considered to be normal nowadays is often connected to the history that has been mostly forgotten. Once you realize that, it is almost impossible to separate those links.
