The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an undeniable increase in the hours of use of digital devices by young people and adults around the world. The question is, will this surge in digital device use have any long-term health implications for children in the future?

The research team collected huge data about the average number of hours children spend using digital devices, whether for study or entertainment, as the team noted that the time spent by a large group of children using digital devices has recently doubled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eye problems that include binocular vision, dry eyes, and eye strain were among the most prominent health implications addressed in this study. Besides eye problems, spending more time in front of screens can also lead to neck and shoulder problems. In addition, screen time appears to be associated with an increased risk of overeating and obesity.

In light of this study that demonstrated the extent of the health damage that digital devices can inflict on children, the authors concluded that awareness of the risks associated with high levels of digital screen use should be increased to reduce negative effects and that teachers and parents should be encouraged to promote the health and well-being of children and adolescents in the pandemic and beyond.
