Dubai residents can finally add some shade for their cars — but not without playing by the rules.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a new permit system that allows parking shades to be installed in residential neighbourhoods. The move is meant to protect cars from the heat while keeping Dubai’s streets safe, organised, and visually clean.
Where Parking Shades Are Allowed
The permit applies only to designated and properly reserved parking spaces in residential areas. Random or unofficial spots won’t make the cut.
According to the RTA, all applications must go through approved contracting companies, not DIY installations.
Safety Comes First
The RTA laid down strict guidelines to make sure parking shades don’t mess with daily movement or traffic flow. Shades must not:
-
Block pedestrian walkways or soft mobility paths
-
Disrupt traffic or road safety
-
Obstruct traffic signs or road markings
-
Damage underground utilities or infrastructure
In short: shade your car, not the street.
Design Rules: Keep It Clean and Neutral
Dubai wants shades that blend in, not stand out.
-
Canopy covers must be in desert-inspired colours
-
Structures should be made of mild steel or aluminium
-
Frames must be powder-coated in light beige
These rules aim to keep the city looking polished while ensuring the structure can handle extreme weather.
Temporary Only, No Permanent Builds
Parking shades must be temporary installations. The foundation depth can’t exceed 0.7 metres, and the structure should be easy to remove.
The RTA also made it clear that shades must be taken down if needed for:
-
Development projects
-
Maintenance work
-
Emergency situations
Why Now?
This update comes after feedback from residents through customer councils and field visits. With summer heat getting harsher and more cars filling residential areas, the demand for shaded parking has been growing fast.
The RTA says the new permit system is designed to improve quality of life while protecting Dubai’s signature look.
