Flydubai to Launch Premium Economy
Flydubai Confirms Three-Class Cabin on Boeing 787-9s, Shedding Low-Cost Origins
Flydubai is taking a major step in its strategic evolution by announcing the introduction of a Premium Economy cabin. This new service, set to debut on the airline's upcoming Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jets, further solidifies its move away from its original pure low-cost carrier (LCC) model.
The airline's chief executive, Ghaith Al Ghaith, confirmed that the new wide-body jets will feature a three-class configuration, including Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class.
This development is part of a deliberate, gradual shift that has seen Flydubai successfully integrate premium offerings like a Business Class lounge and inclusive meals and entertainment into its service model.
The delivery of the first Boeing 787-9 aircraft is anticipated to begin by the end of 2027. This new wide-body fleet, consisting of 30 Dreamliners ordered in 2023, will be instrumental in enabling Flydubai to serve new, longer-range routes and boost flight frequencies on existing popular destinations.
Al Ghaith acknowledged the popularity of Premium Economy globally and stated that its introduction reflects the successful evolution of the airline's model, which has seen rising yields despite the higher costs associated with offering premium products.
Despite the introduction of the wide-body Dreamliners, the airline remains primarily focused on its core narrow-body fleet. Flydubai's future fleet plans include the delivery of 115 more Boeing 737 Max jets, alongside the Dreamliners.
The carrier also placed an order for Airbus A321neo aircraft, driven by their superior availability, longer range of up to nine hours, and increased capacity compared to the yet-to-be-certified 737 Max 10. The strategic introduction of Premium Economy and the diversification of its fleet mark a clear maturation for Flydubai as it prepares to move to the new mega-hub at Al Maktoum International Airport by 2032.
