The excavation, conducted by English estate manager William Claxton Peppe, also unearthed fragments of bones believed to be those of the Buddha.
Following the discovery, Peppe was permitted to keep over 300 duplicate gems, which remained in his family’s possession across generations. These are the same gems that were once put up for auction earlier this year.
The Sotheby’s Auction and Legal Intervention
The collection was initially scheduled for auction by Sotheby’s in Hong Kong in May. However, the Indian government promptly threatened legal action and demanded the return of the jewels, citing their significant cultural and spiritual value.
Following the postponement of the sale, Sotheby’s facilitated the acquisition by Indian conglomerate Godrej Industries Group. This arrangement secured the permanent repatriation of the Piprahwa Gems to India, where they will now be placed on public display.

In a statement on Wednesday, Sotheby’s expressed pride in playing a key role in the gems’ return, saying, "Sotheby’s is delighted to have facilitated the return of the Piprahwa Gems to India."
India’s Ministry of Culture lauded the effort as an exemplary public-private partnership. It described the initiative as aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s broader mission to reclaim and celebrate India’s ancient cultural and spiritual heritage from around the globe.
