Kylian Mbappe delivered a masterclass display of attacking prowess on Monday night, scoring twice to lead France to a commanding 3-0 victory against Iraq in their World Cup Group I encounter.

The Real Madrid star's brace brings him within striking distance of some monumental football records, as he continues his quest for World Cup glory. His two goals elevate him to just one goal behind Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot, while sitting two goals shy of the all-time World Cup scoring record of 18, also currently held by the Argentine legend.

Mbappe's Clinical Finishing

Mbappe has now found the net in 12 consecutive matches for France, cementing his status as one of the world's most prolific attackers. His first strike came in the 14th minute when he fired home with his supposedly weaker left foot from outside the penalty area—a reminder of the complete skillset that makes him such a formidable opponent.

The second goal arrived through Iraqi misfortune in the 54th minute. Goalkeeper Ahmed Basil failed to control a backpass from centre-back Zaid Tahseen, creating an opportunity that Ousmane Dembele quickly spotted. The French winger delivered a selfless pass to Mbappe, who calmly buried the ball into the open net.

It marked a repeat error similar to Iraq's first match against Norway, which led to starter Jalal Hassan being benched in favour of Basil ahead of this fixture.

Dembele also joined the scoresheet in the 66th minute with his first-ever World Cup goal, adding the third point to France's tally in a dominant team performance.

Weather Delays and Tactical Shifts

The match was not without drama beyond the scoreboard. Playing at Lincoln Financial Field, the game experienced more than a two-hour delay due to severe thunderstorms over Philadelphia, leaving both teams waiting as players huddled and fans sought shelter.

Despite the disrupted rhythm, France maintained their intensity throughout. Wingers Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola repeatedly stormed down the flanks, keeping pressure on the Iraqi defence. Olise came agonisingly close to adding another goal when his chip was denied by the crossbar, while Mbappe nearly completed his hat-trick in stoppage time during the 90th minute.

Iraq boss Graham Arnold made several adjustments in response to France's dominance, shifting to a 4-5-1 formation and moving Zidane Iqbal into the No 10 role. Striker Ali Al Hamadi was initially dropped to the bench before being introduced after the injury of Iraq's talisman forward Aymen Hussein.

Hussein's fitness remains in question after he limped off in the 25th minute with an apparent injury. Al Hamadi became the focal point of Iraq's attack upon his introduction, sparking brief moments of creative momentum. In the 73rd minute, Arnold made a double substitution, bringing on Marko Farki and Aimar Sher for Ibrahim Bayesh and Amir Al Ammari, giving Iraq renewed energy in midfield. However, despite gaining some possession, they failed to register a single shot on target against France's Mike Maignan.

Iraq's Tournament Hopes Diminish

Monday's heavy defeat leaves Iraq's World Cup campaign hanging by a thread. The result leaves them fourth in Group I with zero points from their opening matches. They have neither been mathematically eliminated nor secured advancement following the outcome of other group fixtures.

The stakes remain extremely high as Iraq prepares for their final group match against Senegal on Friday in Toronto. Both sides will be desperate to avoid elimination, knowing that anything less than a strong performance could end their tournament dreams.

For France, meanwhile, the victory reinforces their status as tournament favourites. Mbappe's continued goal-scoring form suggests the nation's hopes rest firmly on his shoulders, and if his current trajectory holds, the Golden Boot may yet find its way onto his feet.
