The UAE and Saudi Arabia are officially playing in the big leagues of artificial intelligence. A new analysis by US-based TRG Datacenters ranked the two Gulf nations among the world’s top three AI superpowers—right behind the US and ahead of tech giants like South Korea, France, India, China, and the UK.
The study focused on supercomputing power, the number of AI companies, and how ready governments are to roll out AI across industries.
Power Numbers That Speak Volumes
The UAE made a strong showing with over 188,000 AI chips and a total power capacity of 6.4K megawatts, according to the report. Saudi Arabia also made the cut, securing third place in the global ranking.
TRG said the AI race isn’t just about who has the biggest data centres. Countries are also competing to create policies and regulations that attract top-tier research and global AI companies.
The Gulf’s Growing AI Credibility
This isn’t the first time the Gulf has flexed its AI muscles. Recent reports show Dubai already outpacing San Francisco in AI adoption, while Abu Dhabi ranked eighth globally. The UAE has also been investing heavily in partnerships with major players like Microsoft, Nvidia, and OpenAI.
From creating the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in 2019 to being one of the first countries to appoint an AI minister back in 2017, the UAE has been laying down the groundwork for years.
Big Projects, Bigger Ambitions
The Gulf’s AI push got another spotlight moment in May when Abu Dhabi revealed plans for a massive 5GW UAE-US AI Campus during a visit by US President Donald Trump. The project is considered one of the largest AI infrastructure initiatives in the world and could cement the UAE’s status as a global AI hub for years to come.
