Seven Mosques, One Union: A New Architectural Tribute to the UAE’s Emirates

In a historic gesture to mark Eid Al Etihad and the nation’s 54th anniversary of union, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, has directed that seven new mosques in Abu Dhabi be named after each of the seven emirates.

These mosques will be located in Mohamed bin Zayed City, and collectively they will accommodate about 6,000 worshippers. Designed on roughly 12,000 square metres, their architecture blends traditional Islamic heritage with modern design, symbolizing both the nation’s roots and its forward-looking spirit.

According to the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, which is coordinating the project along with the Presidential Court and municipal authorities, the naming reflects the spirit of unity and solidarity among the Emirates.

The initiative aims to instill in future generations “the values and spirit of the Union,” by commemorating each emirate through a dedicated place of worship — reinforcing both national identity and community cohesion across the federation.

The mosques are expected to officially open in January 2026, offering residents and visitors alike a new network of spiritual hubs that celebrate unity in diversity.

In naming mosques after each emirate, the UAE honors the unique heritage of all seven regions — while affirming that together, they form one nation. This symbolic act stands as a testament to unity, faith, and national pride on Eid Al Etihad.
