The UAE is set to tighten the review and auditing process for granting freelance visas—officially known as the Green Residency—to enhance oversight and protect labour market integrity, Emarat Al Youm reported on Sunday.

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), confirmed that the decision aims to protect rights and regulate the market in a way that serves everyone’s interests.

Al Marri emphasized that freelance visas continue to be issued as usual through official channels, dismissing recent rumours circulating on social media that suggested a suspension of these permits.

According to the official, the increased scrutiny comes after a few cases of misuse and illegal trading of freelance residencies were detected. The GDRFA has since taken necessary measures to maintain system integrity and ensure compliance.

He added that the rise in speculation coincides with a growing demand for freelance visas, reflecting the UAE’s strong appeal to independent professionals and entrepreneurs seeking legal self-employment opportunities.

The UAE’s Freelance Visa, or Green Residency, is one of the government’s key initiatives to empower the talent economy. It allows qualified individuals to work independently without the need for a traditional employer or sponsor, provided they meet eligibility requirements.

While the visa grants legal residency and permission to conduct business activities, it does not entitle holders to sponsor other individuals or hire employees under their name.

The move to enhance visa oversight underscores the UAE’s continued efforts to balance flexibility with accountability in its evolving employment landscape.
