On September 7, the UAE sky will put on its biggest show of the year — a total lunar eclipse, lasting nearly five and a half hours from start to finish. The total “red moon” phase alone will stretch for 82 minutes, making it one of the longest in recent years.

According to Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG), this eclipse is extra special because almost 87% of the world’s population will get to see at least part of it.

Why the moon turns red

During a total lunar eclipse, Earth slides right between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. Instead of going dark, the moon glows a haunting red — sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering blue light and leaving only the red and orange hues to paint the moon. That’s why we call it a Blood Moon.

When to look up in the UAE

Here’s your local schedule on Sunday, September 7:

  • 7:28 pm – Penumbral eclipse begins

  • 8:27 pm – Partial eclipse begins

  • 9:30 pm – Total eclipse starts

  • 10:12 pm – Maximum eclipse (peak red moon)

  • 10:53 pm – Total eclipse ends

  • 11:56 pm – Partial eclipse ends

  • 12:55 am – Penumbral eclipse ends

How to watch it

Good news: you don’t need fancy glasses — lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye. But if you want to level up the view, a telescope will reveal the moon’s craters glowing red in detail.

Astrophotographers, prep your tripods and long exposures. Even a smartphone attached to a telescope eyepiece will do the trick. Just head somewhere dark, away from city lights, and pray for clear skies.

Blood Moon + Burj Khalifa

To make the night even more iconic, DAG will host a public viewing event in Dubai — with a planned shot of the Blood Moon rising behind the Burj Khalifa. And for those who can’t be there in person, a livestream will beam the eclipse worldwide, featuring feeds from Abu Dhabi and beyond.
