Mattel has launched the first-ever Autistic Barbie doll in the United Arab Emirates, marking a significant step in toy representation during World Autism Month. Created in close collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), the new figure is designed to authentically reflect the experiences of autistic individuals and foster inclusivity among young children.
The doll features a unique face sculpt and enhanced joint articulation in the elbows and wrists, allowing for realistic depictions of stimming behaviors such as hand flapping. Its eyes are intentionally gazed slightly to the side to reflect how some autistic people avoid direct eye contact. The outfit consists of a loose-fitting, purple pinstripe A-line dress with short sleeves and a flowy skirt, minimizing fabric-to-skin contact for sensory comfort. The ensemble is completed with flat-soled purple shoes designed to promote stability and ease of movement.
The figure comes equipped with three functional accessories: a pink finger clip fidget spinner that actually spins to aid focus, pink noise-cancelling headphones to help manage sensory overload, and a pink tablet displaying symbol-based Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools.
This addition joins the existing Fashionistas line, which already includes dolls representing children with type 1 diabetes, Down syndrome, and blindness. The new Autistic Barbie is now available at key toy retailers across the UAE for AED 69.
