Bollywood: Zayed Khan's Mother, Zarine Khan, Passes Away

The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of a gracious presence as Zarine Khan (née Katrak) passed away at the age of 81 at her Mumbai residence on Friday morning.

The wife of veteran actor‐filmmaker Sanjay Khan and mother to actor Zayed Khan and designer Sussanne Khan, Zarine’s passing was attributed to age-related ailments after a period of declining health.

Zarine’s journey spanned several roles: from actress in the 1960s – including a part in the film Tere Ghar Ke Saamne alongside Dev Anand – to an interior designer and entrepreneur who quietly shaped her family’s creative legacy.

Married in 1966, the couple’s decades‐long relationship bore a creative and high-profile family that became a fixture in Bollywood social circles.

The funeral was attended by an array of film-industry luminaries who gathered at the Khan family home in Mumbai to offer condolences and support. Stars such as Hrithik Roshan, Jackie Shroff and Bobby Deol were seen among the mourners, with Shroff even cautioning paparazzi to show respect.

The visible emotion underlined the depth of her relationships within the industry, beyond just her familial ties.

In her passing, the Khan family lost a pillar. Sussanne paid tribute on social media, calling herself “honoured and grateful to be your little girl”, highlighting the lasting influence her mother had on her heart, mind and grit.

While Zarine Khan may not have been a mainstream household name for decades, her impact rested in her steadfast support of her family’s creative pursuits and her own quietly dignified presence in the world of film and design.
