New Rail Service Announced Between Oman and the UAE

The UAE and Oman have taken a significant step toward deeper economic integration and greener transport solutions with the announcement of a dedicated rail service linking the two countries.

A preliminary agreement between Noatum Logistics (an AD Ports Group company) and Hafeet Rail (the developer and operator of the first cross-border railway network between Oman and the UAE) sets the foundation for a new freight corridor connecting Sohar (Oman) and Abu Dhabi (UAE).

According to the agreement unveiled at the Global Rail 2025 exhibition in Abu Dhabi, the service will operate seven container trains per week, each with a capacity of 276 TEUs, which translates into an approximate annual throughput of 193,200 TEUs

The dedicated trains will support 20-foot, 40-foot and 45-foot containers, and will carry a wide portfolio of goods currently traded between the two nations, including general cargo, manufactured items, food products, pharmaceuticals and agrifoods.

One of the key benefits of the rail service is its environmental edge. Compared to road transport, rail allows the movement of larger volumes of cargo with lower fuel consumption and significantly reduced carbon emissions per tonne. The service builds on an existing rail shuttle between Khalifa Port (UAE) and Fujairah Terminals, underlining a shift toward inter-modal, sustainable supply-chain infrastructure.

Importantly, the service will leverage the Hafeet Rail network, which is a joint venture linking Oman and the UAE via rail, known to span approximately 303 km and connecting Sohar Port with the UAE’s rail system at Al Ain.

This announcement marks a pivotal moment in Gulf transport infrastructure — positioning the UAE and Oman to benefit from enhanced trade flows, reduced logistics costs, and improved supply-chain resilience. As freight volumes grow and sustainability becomes a strategic priority, this rail link offers a high-impact solution that aligns with both nations’ economic diversification and environmental goals.
