Saudi Pro League Official Confirms That Mo Salah is a Transfer Target

The Saudi Pro League has officially confirmed that Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah is among the key transfer targets for clubs in the Middle Eastern competition, signalling a potential blockbuster move in the upcoming January transfer window.

League chief executive Omar Mugharbel made the comments at the World Football Summit in Riyadh, stating that Salah is “welcome in the Saudi League” and that several clubs are watching his situation closely.

Mugharbel emphasised that while the league itself does not negotiate transfers, individual clubs are responsible for talks with players and their representatives, and Salah is undoubtedly on the list of players of interest. This marks the first time a high-ranking Saudi official has publicly acknowledged the pursuit of Liverpool’s prolific forward, intensifying speculation over his future amid a challenging season at Anfield.

Salah, 33, signed a contract extension with Liverpool in 2025 that runs until June 2027, a move initially aimed at deterring suitors, including Saudi clubs such as Al Ittihad. A reported £150 million bid from Saudi Arabia was rejected in 2023, but renewed interest from the region comes at a time of uncertainty following some recent tensions between the player and Liverpool management.

Despite the public confirmation, not all voices within the Saudi football community are aligned with the idea of signing Salah. Ben Harburg, chairman of Al Kholood, stated that the Egyptian forward might not be the ideal fit for the league, suggesting that younger talents could better serve the long-term ambitions of Saudi clubs.

Salah’s remarkable career at Liverpool includes over 250 goals and more than 100 assists, as well as a vital role in the club’s recent Premier League title success. While his form this season has been scrutinised, his status as one of world football’s most recognisable stars makes him a marquee target, and a potential move to the Saudi Pro League would represent one of the highest-profile transfers in recent history.

As the January transfer window approaches and Salah prepares to join Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations, all eyes will be on how negotiations unfold and whether a Saudi Pro League club can secure one of the biggest names in world football.
