Abu Dhabi launches Free Flow Parking System for streamlined, cashless parking powered by ANPR technology.

Drivers in the capital will soon benefit from a streamlined parking experience as Abu Dhabi announces the launch of an automatic payment scheme designed to eliminate the need for coins, credit cards, or physical parking tickets.

The initiative, dubbed the "Free Flow Parking System," is being rolled out by Q Mobility, the entity responsible for managing public parking and the emirate's Darb road toll network. The new system leverages automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to enhance operational efficiency and significantly reduce the risk of drivers inadvertently receiving fines due to payment errors.

Under the new framework, the parking process becomes entirely seamless. The chargeable period begins the moment a vehicle enters a designated parking zone and concludes upon exit. Fees are automatically calculated and deducted directly from the driver's Darb e-wallet, removing the need for manual interaction at payment machines.

Q Mobility has emphasized the importance of motorists maintaining a sufficient balance in their Darb e-wallets to ensure smooth transactions and avoid penalties. The e-wallet, already widely used for road tolls and public parking payments, serves as the central hub for this digital transition.

The Free Flow system will be introduced in phases. The initial rollout is set to cover several strategic locations within the capital, including multistorey car parks and select private parking areas. While transport authorities have not yet released the specific list of locations for the first phase, the plan includes a future expansion to broader areas of the emirate.

This move aligns with a broader strategy by Abu Dhabi transport authorities to embrace digital innovation, aiming to improve customer service and expand the utility of the Darb online platform.

Expanding the Paid Parking Network

The technological upgrade coincides with a significant expansion of Abu Dhabi's paid parking network. In recent months, Q Mobility has aggressively broadened the scope of paid zones:

  • May 6: A new zone covering over 10,000 spaces was launched in Mohamed bin Zayed City, specifically targeting commercial sectors ME9 and ME12.
  • December 2025: Paid parking was extended to other commercial sectors within Mohamed bin Zayed City.
  • January 2026: The system was introduced in the outer areas of the Al Shahama suburb.
  • January 2026: Mussaffah saw the introduction of paid parking, initially covering sectors M1, M2, M3, M4, and M24.

Background on Q Mobility

Established in 2024 by Abu Dhabi holding company ADQ, Q Mobility operates under the supervision of the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport. Its mandate is to manage, operate, and develop both the Darb road toll system and the Mawaqif public parking infrastructure, positioning the company as a central player in the emirate's smart mobility ecosystem.

As the Free Flow system goes live, it marks a significant shift toward a cashless, automated urban environment, promising to reduce congestion at payment points and simplify the daily commute for residents and visitors alike.
