Dubai to Transform Historic Al Ras into Pedestrian Friendly Area
Revamp aims to enhance walkability, cooling and cultural appeal in one of the city’s oldest districts
Dubai is moving ahead with plans to transform the historic Al Ras district into a pedestrian-friendly destination, with detailed proposals outlining a major redesign focused on walkability, comfort and cultural preservation.
At the heart of the project is the Al Ras Historical Route, a 15-kilometre pedestrian corridor designed to connect key heritage landmarks across the area. The route will include a 5km revitalised waterfront along Dubai Creek, alongside 25 upgraded public squares featuring shaded seating areas, greenery and cultural installations.
The redevelopment will prioritise pedestrian comfort in Dubai’s climate, incorporating shaded walkways, misting systems and microclimate cooling solutions to enable year-round accessibility. Public spaces will be redesigned with green areas, rest zones and art displays, blending modern urban planning with the district’s historic identity.
Authorities have emphasised that the transformation will preserve Al Ras’s traditional character through minimalist design interventions, using materials and layouts that complement its heritage buildings and souks. Existing spaces between structures will be rehabilitated into pedestrian-friendly zones while maintaining the area’s cultural authenticity.
The project forms part of Dubai’s wider Dubai Walk Master Plan, which aims to create a city-wide network of walkways and boost pedestrian mobility. The broader initiative includes thousands of kilometres of pathways, green trails and waterfront routes, as well as improved connectivity through bridges and urban corridors.
Urban planners say the Al Ras revamp will serve as a pilot for future developments, demonstrating how historic districts can be adapted to modern needs while enhancing tourism, accessibility and quality of life.
By combining heritage preservation with innovative cooling and pedestrian infrastructure, Dubai aims to position Al Ras as a vibrant, walkable cultural hub at the heart of the city.
