Abu Dhabi’s long-awaited Guggenheim museum now has an opening date. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi said on Tuesday that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open its doors to visitors on December 11, 2026.

A new landmark for Saadiyat Island

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is located on Saadiyat Island, next to some of Abu Dhabi’s biggest cultural places. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi are all nearby. This makes Saadiyat one of the strongest museum districts in the region.

The building was designed by Frank Gehry, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect. His famous style is clear in the museum design, with bold and unique shapes that stand out right away.

What visitors can expect inside

The museum covers 80,000 square metres, making it one of the largest in the region. It has 11,600 square metres of indoor gallery space and another 23,000 square metres for outdoor exhibitions. Visitors will explore 30 galleries linked by a central atrium.

One of the most eye-catching features is the sculptural cones on the roof. Nine are covered in stainless steel mesh, while one is made with onyx and glass. Some of them rise up to 88 metres. They are not only for design, but also help with ventilation and shade, which can support lower energy use.

The fourth Guggenheim museum with a local identity

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be the fourth museum under the Guggenheim name, after New York, Venice and Bilbao. But officials say this is not just another branch museum. The Abu Dhabi collection has been growing since 2009, and the museum will reflect both the region and the wider Guggenheim story.

Instead of following art history in order, the opening shows will focus on themes such as abstraction, popular culture, land, language and storytelling. More details about the collection and special commissions are expected soon.

Part of Abu Dhabi’s bigger cultural plan

The museum opening is another big step for Saadiyat Island and Abu Dhabi’s cultural vision. The emirate continues to grow as a global arts destination, and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is one of its most important projects. With the opening date now confirmed, attention will soon turn to the artworks and exhibitions inside.
