Lando Norris has been crowned Formula 1 world champion after finishing third at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, doing enough at the Yas Marina Circuit to secure his maiden title at the season finale.
The McLaren driver entered Sunday’s race knowing that a top-three finish would be sufficient to seal the championship, and he delivered under pressure with a composed and controlled drive. The result makes Norris the 11th British driver to win the Formula 1 world title.
Norris briefly faced a stewards’ investigation after running off the road while overtaking Yuki Tsunoda, but no further action was taken, allowing his race result — and championship triumph — to stand.
Although Max Verstappen dominated the race from pole position to claim victory and end the season with the most wins overall, the result was not enough to overturn Norris’ championship advantage. Verstappen crossed the finish line 12.5 seconds ahead of second-placed Oscar Piastri, with Norris following 3.9 seconds behind his McLaren team-mate.
The Dutch driver resisted attempts to disrupt the title fight by backing up the field, while Norris maintained a secure buffer over Charles Leclerc, finishing 6.7 seconds clear of the Ferrari driver in fourth.
The result capped off a breakthrough season for Norris and McLaren, marking a major milestone in both the driver’s career and the team’s return to the top step of the Formula 1 championship standings.
