UAE President Orders Release of 956 Prisoners Ahead of Eid Al Adha 2026

In a gesture of compassion and social solidarity, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the release of 956 prisoners ahead of Eid Al Adha 2026, the state news agency WAM reported. The move underscores the UAE’s commitment to fostering family and community stability while promoting rehabilitation and second chances.

Sheikh Mohamed also directed authorities to settle the outstanding financial obligations of the released inmates, ensuring a smoother reintegration into society. This initiative follows a similar pardon earlier this year, when the President ordered the release of 1,440 prisoners to mark Ramadan.

A Tradition of Mercy and Renewal

Eid Al Adha, known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is a time of reflection, gratitude, and generosity. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering faith and is celebrated with family gatherings, acts of charity, and the sharing of meals with loved ones and the less fortunate.

In a parallel humanitarian gesture, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, ordered the release of 227 prisoners, while Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, pardoned 230 inmates in honor of the occasion.

How the Pardon Process Works

The UAE’s annual Eid pardons are part of a structured process to ensure fairness and eligibility. Here’s how it works:

  1. Eligibility Criteria

    • Inmates must have served a portion of their sentence.
    • They must demonstrate good conduct and have not benefited from previous pardons.
    • Participation in rehabilitation and reform programs is a key requirement.
  2. Proposal and Approval

    • Jails in each emirate prepare proposed pardon lists, focusing on inmates convicted of less serious crimes, often involving financial offenses.
    • The lists are reviewed by prosecutors and revised based on case files.
    • Final approval is granted by the Attorney General before submission to the respective ruler’s court for a decision.

A Four-Day Break for Eid Al Adha

As part of the celebrations, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) announced a four-day holiday for private sector employees. Workers will enjoy leave from May 26 to May 29, with offices resuming normal operations on June 1.

A Commitment to Rehabilitation and Hope

The UAE’s pardons reflect a broader national philosophy: justice tempered with mercy. By releasing prisoners who have demonstrated reform, the country reinforces its dedication to second chances, social cohesion, and human dignity.

As families gather to celebrate Eid Al Adha, this act of clemency serves as a reminder of the power of compassion in shaping a more inclusive and hopeful society.
