A quiet Friday evening turned into chaos in Wadi Esfita, Ras Al Khaimah, when a gas cylinder explosion ripped through a family home. The incident, which happened during the evening call to prayer, left one housemaid critically injured and the home badly damaged.
How It Happened
Investigators said the explosion was sparked by a gas leak after rats chewed through the cylinder hose. The leak ignited, causing a massive blast that blew the kitchen door nearly 50 metres away and destroyed appliances, ceilings, and walls.
Victim in Critical Condition
The housemaid, a woman in her 40s of Asian nationality, was in the kitchen when the blast hit. She suffered severe second- and third-degree burns over most of her body. Doctors say she may need up to 20 surgeries. She was first rushed to Fujairah Hospital, then transferred to Sheikh Khalifa Specialty Hospital due to the seriousness of her condition.
Family’s Close Call
Luckily, the family wasn’t inside the home when the explosion happened. “It’s only by God’s mercy that none of us were hurt,” said resident Musabah Muhammad Al-Laili. “We are heartbroken for our maid and praying for her recovery.”
Safety Reminder
Emergency teams from Ras Al Khaimah Police and Civil Defence quickly secured the area. The family is urging others to check their gas connections regularly. “Even a small thing, like a rat biting a hose, can turn into disaster,” Al-Laili warned.
