Passengers looking out from their plane windows at Dubai International Airport (DXB) on November 6 were treated to a sight few airports can offer: a full-on spin class happening right next to the runway.

As part of the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC), the airport once again transformed its tarmac into a cycling arena—turning jet-fueled energy into pedal-powered fitness.

Organized in collaboration with premium fitness studio CRANK, the event is one of the most exclusive fitness experiences in the city. Riders powered through a high-intensity 30-minute class led by top instructors, set to upbeat music and the dramatic backdrop of aircraft preparing for take-off.

“Where Planes Take Off, Riders Power On”

The CRANK Runway Ride has become a Dubai Fitness Challenge highlight—merging the thrill of aviation with the city’s ever-growing fitness culture.

Michelle Lee, Vice President of Brand and Communications at Dubai Airports, said the event reflects DXB’s commitment to wellness and innovation.

“The CRANK Runway Ride reflects our continued commitment to supporting Dubai’s ambition to build healthier and more active communities. It also reflects our commitment to delivering unique DXB experiences that connect people, create memorable moments, and contribute to the city’s culture of health and vitality,” she said.

From a “Crazy Idea” to a Global First

For Nuno Costa, founder and general manager of CRANK, seeing riders take over one of the world’s busiest runways is still a pinch-me moment.

“We made history last year by transforming this iconic runway into a high-energy cycling studio. Then, we were in the area where planes were landing, this year, we’re where the planes take off,” Costa told Gulf News. “It’s an electric feeling.”

Costa added that the concept began as “a crazy idea” that Dubai Airports immediately embraced.

“We approached the Dubai Airports team last year and they said, ‘Yes, let’s make it happen.’ I think this is the only airport in the world that could make such an idea a reality.”

Trainers, First-Timers, and the Power of Inclusion

Leading the ride was Adam Rees, one of CRANK’s star instructors and a former Emirates cabin crew member.

“I’ve spent plenty of time at the airport, but never on the runway with planes taking off right beside me. It’s insane, such a powerful experience,” he said.

Among the participants was Team Angel Wolf, the Dubai-based foundation promoting inclusivity and active living for People of Determination. Founders Nick Watson and his daughter Tia joined the event, continuing their mission of inclusion through movement.

“I’ve never done a spin class before, and for my first one to be on an airport runway, that’s unbelievable,” said Tia. “The energy, the music, the vibe—it was so much fun.”

A Spin Class Unlike Any Other

Also joining the ride was Aarti Shah, a model, influencer, and Person of Determination, who attended with her mother Avni. Aarti became the first POD to take part in the runway ride.

“It’s an incredible experience. Doing this on the runway was truly once-in-a-lifetime,” the duo said. “Even if you’ve never tried a spin class before, just enjoy it—you’ll fall in love.”

Even Dubai Airports staff couldn’t resist joining the fun.

“You can feel the air, the wind, and the energy,” said participant Veena Wadhwani. “I’ve done spin classes before, but this is on another level.”

A Fitness Moment That Could Only Happen in Dubai

The CRANK Runway Ride once again proves that when it comes to creative fitness experiences, Dubai does it differently. From skyscraper climbs to cycling next to airplanes, the Dubai Fitness Challenge continues to inspire residents and visitors to move—anytime, anywhere, even on a runway.
