Dubai Metro Blue Line has reached an important stage, with the project moving ahead fast as Dubai expands its public transport network.

Construction of Dubai’s new Metro Blue Line has reached another major milestone. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed that the first phase of tunnelling is now complete.

This progress comes only two months after His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum officially launched the underground excavation work for the new metro line.

Fast tunnelling progress

The RTA said the Blue Line is being built using a new tunnel boring machine called Al Wugeisha. It uses advanced digital technology to make underground work faster and more accurate.

The machine can dig up to 30 metres of tunnel per day. This is more than double the speed used during Dubai Metro’s first tunnel works in 2007, when the average was around 12 metres per day.

With this improved technology, the first tunnelling phase was completed in just two months.

How the machine works

Al Wugeisha is about 163 metres long and weighs around 2,000 tonnes. It does more than digging. It also removes soil and installs the tunnel lining as it moves forward.

This allows the work to continue in one smooth process and helps improve precision.

What this means for Dubai

The RTA said this milestone shows how much Dubai’s engineering and construction work has improved in recent years. Work on Dubai Metro Blue Line is still ongoing as the city prepares for more growth and new communities.
