Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte will spend Christmas and New Year inside the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention facility without family visits, the court confirmed through its enforced holiday rules.
Family Visits Restricted
Duterte’s youngest daughter, Veronica “Kitty” Duterte, said she personally informed her father that family members would not be allowed to visit during the holidays. While he felt disappointed, Duterte reportedly tried to stay composed and accept the situation.
Kitty added that although they cannot visit inside the facility, family members and supporters plan to remain nearby to show support during the festive season.
Holiday Life in Detention
Detainees at the ICC facility sometimes hold informal holiday gatherings among themselves, though participation is optional. Duterte can decide whether to join these activities.
The ICC is currently on judicial recess from December 12 to January 5, with court proceedings paused. The court also observes December 25 and 26 as official holidays, further limiting visitation schedules.
Staying Strong Amid Charges
Kitty shared that her last visit with her father ended with a prayer. While Duterte was not in the best emotional state, he remained strong and composed.
Duterte is facing crimes against humanity charges linked to his war on drugs, which led to thousands of deaths during his presidency.
