Emirates Introduces New Economy Headrest That Could Make Neck Pillows Obsolete
The adjustable U-Dream headrest will be installed across Emirates’ entire Airbus A350 fleet by the end of 2026.
Economy Class passengers flying with Emirates may soon be able to leave their travel pillows at home. The Dubai-based airline has begun introducing an innovative adjustable headrest designed to provide greater support for the head and neck during sleep.
Known as the U-Dream headrest, the new feature is already available on three Emirates Airbus A350 aircraft. The airline plans to complete its installation across the entire A350 fleet before the end of 2026.
The headrest will later be added to most of Emirates’ retrofitted Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft, with installations expected to begin in 2027. Emirates’ 270 Boeing 777X aircraft on order will also be delivered with the headrest already fitted.
Designed for Better Sleep in Economy Class
The padded leather headrest features flexible side cushions that can be folded inward to cradle the passenger’s head and support the neck. The design aims to reduce the familiar problem of the head falling forward or leaning uncomfortably to one side while sleeping.
Passengers can move the headrest vertically and adjust its angle to suit their height, preferred position and individual comfort.
“The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep—by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed,” said Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline.
According to Emirates, the headrest has undergone independent testing and verification in line with European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards.
Which Passengers Will Experience It First?
Travellers flying aboard Emirates’ newer Airbus A350 aircraft will be the first to experience the U-Dream headrest more widely. However, availability will initially depend on the aircraft assigned to each route, meaning the feature will not immediately appear on every Emirates flight.
Cabin crew have been trained to assist passengers with adjusting the headrest. Its leather surface has also been designed for easy cleaning after every flight.
The introduction forms part of Emirates’ broader investment in improving the passenger experience across all cabin classes. While it may not completely replace the neck pillow for every traveller, the U-Dream headrest could make sleeping in Economy Class noticeably more comfortable.
