Etihad Rail's First Passenger Train Arrives in Abu Dhabi
UAE launches first passenger train, linking emirates with fast, integrated, and historic rail travel.
History came alive at the railway platform this morning as the United Arab Emirates welcomed its first passenger train, marking a transformative milestone in the nation's transportation infrastructure.
The inaugural journey began in Fujairah at approximately 5:34 AM and reached Abu Dhabi at 7:19 AM, completing the trip in just under one hour and 45 minutes. The train made scheduled stops in Sharjah and Dubai before arriving at its final destination, where crowds had gathered to celebrate the landmark occasion. Cheers and applause erupted as the locomotive rolled into the station, with passengers stepping off to a warm reception from onlookers eager to witness the historic event.
Etihad Rail placed considerable emphasis on ensuring accessible connectivity to and from the stations, recognizing that the rail experience extends beyond the journey itself. According to Adhraa Almansoori, Executive Director of Commercial at Etihad Rail Mobility, the operator has carefully coordinated how travelers will reach stations through various means including shuttle buses, existing public transit networks, taxi services, and ride-hailing applications.
All stations across the network are integrated with their respective emirates' public transport systems. Looking ahead, the upcoming Dubai terminal, scheduled to open in September, will be positioned adjacent to an existing Dubai Metro station, offering passengers a convenient interchange option between the two systems.
Celebrating a New Era
The arrival was met with festive celebrations throughout the station. Traditional Emirati performances greeted departing passengers while complimentary amenities including fresh snacks, beverages, and a photo opportunity booth created a celebratory ambiance. Decorative elements such as colorful balloons added to the occasions, with many visitors pausing to document the memorable moment.
This development represents a pivotal expansion of Etihad Rail's passenger mobility offerings and signals the beginning of regular commercial service connecting multiple emirates across the federation. With the full integration of road-rail interfaces and multimodal connectivity, the initiative positions the UAE to enter a new chapter in modern mass transit development.
