A gang of criminals has been sentenced to prison on charges of selling counterfeiting currencies, according to the UAE Public Prosecution.

However, the Public Prosecution has not revealed the sentence term, nor the suspects' nationality.

The group of suspects defrauded individuals by promoting fake currencies on social media platforms, claiming that they were genuine currencies that offer discounts of up to 50 percent on the actual currency value.

The suspects would hand over the counterfeit currencies to the victim at a location agreed on between both parties for exchange and delivery and they receive genuine UAE dirhams in return.

The Public Prosecution has urged the public to only obtain and exchange currencies through licensed authorities.
