A huge fire ripped through Tondo, Manila, yesterday, leaving about 1,500 families — that’s roughly 4,500 residents — without homes. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the blaze started in the Aroma compound’s temporary housing in Barangay 105 and quickly spread to nearby houses. It took firefighters six hours to put it out.

Heavy Firefighting Effort

Three helicopters — a Black Hawk, a UH1H, and a Sokol — scooped water from Manila Bay to help douse the flames. On the ground, 32 BFP trucks, volunteer brigades, a rescue truck, and an ambulance were deployed. Manila Mayor Isko Moreno was also on-site to oversee operations.

Injuries and Odd Incidents

Two men, both 34, suffered minor injuries during the chaos. In an unusual twist, a cat bit a toddler amid the firefighting efforts, but no serious harm was reported.

Not the First Time

This isn’t the first tragedy for Aroma compound — back in September last year, nine of its tenement buildings were destroyed by fire.
