Passengers heading to Lisbon this week are in for a plot twist. Both Emirates and Etihad have cancelled multiple flights as Portugal rolls into a nationwide strike expected to pull in nearly half of the country’s workforce. With public transport set to take a major hit, UAE airlines decided to pause operations for safety and logistics.

Which Flights Are Affected

Emirates cancelled its EK191 and EK193 flights from Dubai to Lisbon on December 11, along with their return flights EK192 and EK194.
The airline also announced it won’t accept passengers connecting through Dubai on these Lisbon-bound flights.

Etihad followed with the cancellation of EY099 on Wednesday and EY100 on Thursday, citing the same reason.

What Airlines Are Advising

Both carriers are telling passengers to stay updated:

  • Travellers who booked directly with Emirates should reach out to the airline for new options.

  • Those who booked through agents should contact their travel agency.

  • Etihad passengers are encouraged to keep their contact details updated so they receive alerts instantly.

Airlines continue to monitor the situation and will update schedules once things in Portugal move again.

Why the Strike Is Big

The walkout is a protest against proposed labour law changes — and it’s massive enough to disrupt buses, trains, and flights. Portugal’s national airline started cancelling services in advance, warning travellers to expect delays and chaos.

Why It Matters for UAE Travellers

Lisbon remains a top pick for UAE residents thanks to its charm, food culture, affordability, and rising digital-nomad scene. With flights frozen for now, travel plans might need a quick shuffle.
