Dr Felicity McCormack from Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future (SAEF) based at Monash University has led a study, published in Nature in July 2026, where scientists have confirmed that a critical, predictable 30-50-year period of ice behaviour in Antarctica will pass before melting becomes unstable. Based on observational satellite data in conjunction with numerical modeling, scientists have already confirmed that projections for nearby sea level rise are highly constrained, ensuring that coastal planners will have ample time (multi-decades) to adapt to the situation before instability kicks in.
