Many countries in the Middle East have claimed Baklava as their national dessert. Though, the origins of the dessert were through the Ottoman Empire which at the time had the countries; Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Egypt, Hungary, Romania, Jordan and many more. The Ottoman Empire was one of the largest empires in the world! It existed from 1299 to 1923 (634 years!!).

What is Baklava made of?

Baklava is normally prepared in large pans. Many layers of filo dough, separated with melted butter and vegetable oil, are laid in the pan. A layer of chopped nuts—typically walnuts or pistachios, but hazelnuts are also sometimes used—is placed on top, then more layers of filo.

Where was Baklava invented?

However, whether the dessert came from the ancient Greek or Byzantine empires or the nomadic Arabs or Turks, is still uncertain. These countries still argue to this day about who is the original inventor of the Baklava. Such as The Greeks and the Turks still argue over which dishes were originally Greek and which Turkish. 

Baklava in the past was a dessert for the rich and wealthy of the Ottoman Empire and was only had for special occasions. Not as wealthy people did not have the chance to celebrate with Baklavas. Nowadays, Baklavas is a dessert that everyone eats and enjoys! In restaurants such as Nusr-et have the amazing food as the only dessert on the menu.
