Outdoor Laborers to Get Midday Break from This Date
Mandatory midday break for UAE outdoor workers begins June 15 to protect against heat stress and health risks.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced the commencement of this year's mandatory midday break for outdoor workers. The protective measure is set to begin on June 15 and will run until September 15, covering the peak summer months.
The Occupational Heat Stress Prevention Policy
Officially known as the Occupational Heat Stress Prevention Policy, the initiative was first introduced in 2004 to safeguard the health and safety of workers laboring in open spaces. Under the current regulations, all work activities under direct sunlight are strictly prohibited between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM.
The policy aims to provide essential respite from the scorching noon heat, reducing the risk of heat stress and related health complications. This annual ban applies to all companies employing workers in outdoor environments across the UAE.
Strict Enforcement and Penalties
The Ministry emphasized that compliance with the midday break rule is mandatory. Companies found violating the ban face significant financial penalties. A fine of AED 5,000 ($1,360) will be imposed for each individual breach involving a worker. If multiple violations are recorded, the maximum penalty can reach AED 50,000.
Authorities will monitor compliance closely as temperatures rise, ensuring that employers adhere to the schedule to protect their workforce.
Rising Temperatures in the UAE
The announcement coincides with a noticeable shift in the nation's weather patterns. Following a relatively cooler spring marked by unsettled conditions, the UAE has recently seen temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C. As the country transitions into the astronomical start of summer on June 21, these measures serve as a critical public health intervention.
Medical experts have previously urged residents and workers to modify their routines and exercise caution as temperatures climb, highlighting the importance of hydration and avoiding exposure during the hottest hours of the day. The midday break remains one of the most effective structural safeguards employed by the government to manage occupational heat stress.
