Traditional Gun Salute Not to Go Ahead for Queen's Birthday

Wednesday, April 21th will mark the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II’s 95th birthday. This birthday will be her first in more than 70 years without her husband, Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh passed away on April 9, and was buried at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on Saturday.
On April 17th, more than 700 members of the Armed Forces honoured HRH The Duke of Edinburgh at his funeral at Windsor. Tocelebrate his life and service to his country as a proud member of the Armed Forces community.
The UK entered an eight-day mourning period, which ended at 8am on Sunday, with flags on government buildings being returned to full mast as a mark of respect to Prince Philip.

However, The Ministry of Defence said the 41 and 21-gun salutes at Hyde Park and the Tower of London, which are traditionally fired to mark her birthday, have both been cancelled. This means that the royal family will remain in mourning period until Thursday after the Queen’s birthday.
It is the second year in a row that the tradition will not go ahead. In 2020, the salutes did not take place as the UK grappled with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
In 1939, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh met Her Majesty The Queen for the first time at Britannia Royal Naval College.
