The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has dismissed claims of cloud-seeding operations being conducted during the recent torrential rains that swept across the UAE. Dr. Ahmed Habib from the NCM clarified that no cloud seeding missions were carried out amidst the extreme weather conditions experienced in the country on Tuesday.
NCM Denies Cloud Seeding During UAE's Record Rainfall
Dr. Habib emphasized that cloud-seeding is not undertaken during periods of severe weather. He refuted widespread rumors circulating online, stating firmly, "No pilots were dispatched for seeding operations in this period."
The UAE, renowned for its arid climate, witnessed an unprecedented downpour on Tuesday, marking the heaviest rainfall recorded in the past 75 years.
Suspension of Cloud Seeding Operations During Severe Weather
While the UAE regularly conducts cloud-seeding operations throughout the year to enhance rainfall, all such activities are halted during severe storms or when there is a heightened risk of lightning. This precautionary measure is primarily implemented due to safety concerns and logistical constraints.
Dr. Habib explained that cloud-seeding typically targets clouds with salt flares during their early formation, before precipitation occurs. However, when severe thunderstorms develop, it becomes impractical and unsafe to carry out these operations.
