Dubai Enhances Key Roads with Advanced Drainage Infrastructure

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of extensive upgrades along Al Warqa’a 1 Street, designed to enhance flood resilience and improve mobility for motorists and pedestrians alike.

The 7-kilometre project, spanning both directions between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Ras Al Khor Road, introduced a modern stormwater drainage network alongside expanded traffic capacity as part of Dubai’s push to enhance key urban infrastructure after historic flooding events.

Boosting Traffic Flow and Flood Protection

As part of the road enhancements, the RTA converted four traditional roundabouts into smart, signalised intersections, which local authorities say have improved traffic flow by as much as 30 per cent along the corridor.

The integrated upgrade package also includes:

  • 6,600 metres of advanced stormwater drainage piping, designed to better manage rainwater and ward off flooding during heavy rainfall.
  • 324 modern street-lighting poles, increasing visibility and safety for night-time travel.
  • 111 new parking spaces to support local access and convenience.
  • Pedestrian pathways covering about 41,000 square metres, promoting safer walking routes.

Integrated Urban Development

RTA officials say the enhancements respond to community needs and align with Dubai’s long-term vision of a smart, resilient and people-centric urban environment. The new drainage systems and traffic improvements follow severe storms in April 2024 that led to widespread flooding, prompting authorities to accelerate infrastructure upgrades across the emirate.

Hamad Al Shehhi, Director of Roads at the Traffic and Roads Agency, highlighted that the completed works build on prior phases, such as the addition of direct entry and exit routes to Al Warqa’a from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, further easing access to and from the area.

In addition to drainage and road enhancements, the project also supports broader connectivity goals by incorporating cycling tracks to link neighbouring communities and promoting sustainable transport options.

Residents and commuters can now benefit from improved travel conditions, reduced flood risk and enhanced safety as Dubai continues to invest in modernising its transport infrastructure to meet future urban demands.
