Emirati Teen Becomes Youngest Arab to Climb Mount Vinson

Eighteen-year-old Emirati mountaineer Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi has etched her name into the record books as the youngest Arab to summit Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, marking a historic achievement for the UAE and the wider Arab world.

On Tuesday, 6 January 2026, Al Awadhi reached the 4,892-metre summit of Mount Vinson, enduring extreme polar conditions with temperatures plunging below minus 40 °C, fierce winds and weeks of isolation and hardship that tested her physical and mental resilience.

A Milestone in a Global Quest

The ascent of Mount Vinson represents the third major summit in Al Awadhi’s ambitious pursuit of the Seven Summits, the challenge to climb the tallest peak on each continent,  and places her among a select group of elite adventurers.

This latest feat builds on her successful climb of Mount Elbrus in Europe last year, where she also broke records as the youngest Emirati to reach its peak.

Dedication and Inspiration

Al Awadhi dedicated her achievement to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, acknowledging their unwavering support for Emirati youth and women.

“I am fortunate not only to dream, but to have the support and resources that allow me to turn those dreams into reality,” she said, highlighting the importance of perseverance, courage and national pride in achieving monumental goals.

Beyond the Summit

Currently a university student majoring in economics, Al Awadhi has emphasised the importance of balancing academic ambition with bold pursuits like mountaineering, inspiring young people across the Arab world to pursue their own challenges.

Her successful climb of Mount Vinson not only enhances the UAE’s profile in global adventure sports and polar exploration but also positions her as a role model for youth and women striving to reach new heights in any field.

The achievement is a testament to determination and resilience, showcasing that with preparation, support and tenacity, even the most formidable peaks can be conquered.
