Mohamed Hany own goal sets a new FIFA World Cup record

The FIFA World Cup 2026 has set a new record for the most own goals in a single tournament, following an unfortunate moment for defender Mohamed Hany.

Hany scored the 13th own goal of the 2026 tournament during a match against Australia. The goal happened when Australia’s Aiden O-Neill sent a ball into the box from a set-piece. In an attempt to clear the ball, Hany accidentally headed it into his own net, giving Australia the equalizing goal.

This mistake also puts Hany in the football history books for another reason. He is now only the second player ever to score two own goals in a single World Cup tournament. The only other player to do this was Bulgaria’s Ivan Vutsov in 1966.

With 13 own goals, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially broken the previous record of 12 own goals, which was set during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
