Ramadan Recipes: Wedang Ronde

Wedang Ronde is glutinous rice balls in ginger syrup that are commonly stuffed with ground peanuts and sugar. It is best enjoyed in rainy seasons when the temperature dips.

Rice balls

100g glutinous rice flour
80 - 100ml water

Peanut filling

50g roasted peanut
25g sugar

Ginger syrup

500ml water
50g ginger - peeled and bruised
2 lemongrass
75g sugar
  • Method & Directions

  1. Prepare the ginger syrup

    In a pot, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and strain to get a clear syrup.
  2. Make the peanut filling

    Grind together peanuts and sugar in a food processor, and set aside.
  3. Make the rice balls dough

    In a mixing bowl, place glutinous rice flour, pour water in batches, and knead with your hands until the dough comes together into a play dough-like consistency.
  4. Shape the rice balls

    Divide the dough into 20 portions, shape each one into a disc, and place 1/2 teaspoon of peanut filling at the center, then roll into a ball. Repeat for the rest of the dough.
  5. Cook the rice balls

    Bring a pot of water to boil, then drop the rice balls and cook until they float to the surface.
  6. Serve

    Place the rice balls in serving bowls with ginger syrup. Serve immediately.
