Sharjah Begins New Tunnel Project to Ease Dubai Commuter Traffic

A major infrastructure initiative designed to alleviate chronic traffic congestion on the vital corridor between Sharjah and Dubai has officially commenced. The project, which involves the construction of a new tunnel at the Al Taawun roundabout, marks a significant step forward in efforts to streamline one of the region's most notorious bottlenecks.

Strategic Route Improvements

The Al Taawun roundabout serves as a critical junction for thousands of daily commuters traveling from Sharjah into Dubai. The area, particularly the stretch extending from Al Nahda Bridge to the roundabout, has long been plagued by severe gridlock during peak morning and evening hours. To address this, the Sharjah Ruler recently approved a series of projects totaling Dh150 million, with the Al Taawun tunnel being a central component aimed at enhancing overall road network efficiency.

Diversion Plans and Timeline

Construction work is set to begin this weekend, specifically starting Saturday, June 13. To accommodate the excavation and building process, traffic patterns will be altered immediately. Motorists are being redirected through Al Corniche Street while the tunnel development takes place.

While the project aims to improve traffic flow significantly upon completion, officials have not yet announced a definitive finish date. Authorities have urged drivers to strictly adhere to the approved diversion routes and follow all posted safety instructions to ensure a smooth transition during the construction phase.

Community Reaction and Concerns

The announcement has been largely welcomed by residents who have endured years of daily delays. Many local workers, particularly those commuting between Sharjah and Dubai, view the tunnel as a necessary solution to a long-standing infrastructure deficit. However, there is apprehension regarding the interim period of construction.

Residents have expressed hope that the timing of the work, coinciding with the summer school holidays, will minimize disruption. With fewer students on the roads, traffic volume is currently lower than during the academic year. Nonetheless, concerns remain about potential spillover effects on alternative routes, such as increased pressure on nearby junctions like Al Khulafa to Al Rashideen, where additional roadworks are also scheduled to commence on Saturday.

Local commuters emphasized the anxiety associated with heavy congestion caused by the mix of school buses, commercial lorries, and private vehicles.
