The United Arab Emirates is preparing for a significant spike in temperatures this week, with the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) forecasting highs of up to 48°C in select areas of the Abu Dhabi emirate.
According to the latest weather models, Thursday will mark the peak of this heatwave. While the capital city of Abu Dhabi is expected to reach a maximum of 43°C, outlying regions including Mezaira, Gasyoura, and Al Quaa are projected to hit the scorching 48°C mark.
Dubai is expected to fare slightly better, though still dangerously hot, with temperatures forecast to top out at 40°C on Thursday. Across the rest of the federation, daytime temperatures are expected to remain consistently above 40°C.
A Shift from a Cool Spring This intense heat follows a relatively cooler and unsettled spring season. However, the transition into summer has been abrupt, with temperatures regularly surpassing the 40°C threshold in recent weeks. This trend mirrors last year's record-breaking heat, where the UAE experienced its hottest April and May on record, with daily averages exceeding 40°C.
The current heatwave comes just ahead of the official astronomical start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, which falls on June 21. Last week, the country already saw extreme conditions, with Fujairah recording a high of 46°C on Tuesday.
Health Warnings Issued In response to the forecast, the NCM has issued urgent health advisories. Residents and visitors are strongly urged to:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoid direct exposure to the sun, particularly during peak hours between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
- Ensure that pets have access to ample water and shade.
Authorities remind the public that the combination of high temperatures and humidity poses serious health risks, including heat exhaustion and sunstroke. As the country moves deeper into the summer season, residents are advised to monitor weather updates closely and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
