Ghana’s Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah has died in a military helicopter crash that took place on Wednesday, along with seven others — including Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and three airforce crew.

What Happened

The Ghanaian military said they lost radar contact with a Z9 airforce helicopter before the crash. The aircraft went down while officials were on duty, but no official cause has been released yet.

Government Confirms Loss

President John Mahama’s chief of staff, Julius Debrah, confirmed the incident in a press conference, calling it a national tragedy. "Our comrades and servicemen died in service to the country," he said, as condolences poured in.

What’s Next

Boamah, a former communications minister, had only stepped into the defence role in January. His successor will have a tough job ahead — Ghana has been working to strengthen security amid growing regional threats from Islamist groups, especially near the border with Burkina Faso.
