FIFA World Cup: Egypt Denied Request to Stay in Seattle Ahead of Iran Game

The Egyptian national football team will face their final Group G match against Iran without the benefit of a pre-match stay in Seattle, after US authorities rejected a request to allow the squad to remain in the city.

According to manager Hossam Hassan, local officials denied the "Pharaohs'" late application to fly directly from Vancouver and settle in Seattle ahead of Friday's decisive fixture at Lumen Field. Citing security concerns as the primary reason for the rejection, the United States mandated that the delegation return to their training base in Spokane, located approximately 280 miles east of Seattle.

"The security authorities refused the team's request to stay in the city of Seattle as planned after the New Zealand match," Hassan said in a statement released by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA). "Therefore, the team's delegation will return to the city of Spokane."

A Bid to Prevent Fatigue

The request was driven by logistical concerns rather than tactical preferences. The Egyptian coaching staff had hoped to avoid the travel fatigue associated with moving between cities on short notice. After playing their previous group match against New Zealand in Vancouver, the team sought a direct route to Seattle to rest and acclimatize before facing Iran.

"The team had wanted to travel directly to Seattle to preserve the players from travel fatigue due to the numerous trips in preparation for the Iran match on June 26," Hassan explained.

Instead, the squad will endure the journey back to Spokane, adding hours of transit time before Friday's showdown. While the long-distance commute presents a physical challenge, it remains an operational hurdle rather than a tournament-defining one, given Egypt's current standing.

High Stakes in Group G

Despite the travel setback, Egypt enters the match in commanding position. Following their historic 3-1 victory over New Zealand—their first-ever win in World Cup history—the Pharaohs sit atop Group G with four points.

A draw against Iran would be sufficient to guarantee Egypt's progression to the Round of 32. However, a victory would secure them the top spot in the group, potentially offering a more favorable path through the knockout stages.

For Iran, the stakes are equally high as they look to secure their own advancement. The match at Lumen Field promises to be a tense affair, with Egypt determined to maintain their momentum despite the administrative disruptions leading up to kickoff.
