Nine Killed After Woman Opens Fire at High School in British Columbia, Canada

At least nine people were killed and dozens more injured on Tuesday when a woman opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the remote northeastern region of British Columbia, Canadian police and officials said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that six victims were found dead inside the school, two were discovered at a residence believed to be linked to the attack, and another person died while being transported to the hospital.

The suspected shooter, identified by authorities as a woman, was also found dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted injury, police said. Officials have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The shooting erupted at about 1:20 p.m. local time, prompting an active shooter alert and lockdown in the community of Tumbler Ridge, a town of roughly 2,400 residents. RCMP and emergency crews swiftly responded, searching the school and nearby properties.

Authorities said at least two people were airlifted to hospitals with serious or life-threatening injuries, and up to 25 others were being treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

The incident has sent shockwaves through this small community and across Canada, where school shootings are relatively rare. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep sorrow for the victims and their families. British Columbia’s Premier and local leaders also issued statements mourning the lives lost and offering support to families and first responders.

“This is a devastating day for Tumbler Ridge and for Canada,” one official said, noting the difficulty of understanding why such an attack occurred. Investigators have not released a motive or identified any connection between the suspect and the victims.

Schools in the district have been closed for the remainder of the week as the community grapples with the aftermath and authorities continue their investigation. The RCMP has assured there are no additional suspects and that the situation is under control.

This shooting is one of the deadliest in recent Canadian history, following other major mass-killing events in the country and reigniting discussions about public safety and gun violence.
