Palestinian-American Artist Samia Halaby's Exhibition in Sharjah!

The Sharjah Art Museum is hosting an exhibition of Palestinian-American artist Samia Halaby's work until Jan. 4, 2024. 

The exhibition is part of the museum's 'Lasting Impressions' series, which features 180 art pieces from Halaby's six-decade artistic career. 

The collection of artworks is curated by Inass Yassin.

Samia Halaby was born in 1936 in Jerusalem. Her family moved to Ohio, US in the early 1950s. 

Samia Halaby is known as a pioneer of abstract art in the Arab World. Other than being an artist, Halaby is an activist and educator. 

She founded the Samia A Halaby Foundation to support working-class Palestinian women and children. 

In 1972, she became the first full-time female associate professor at the Yale School of Art.  

Her paintings are part of private and institutional collections such as the British Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, and Palestinian Museum in Birzeit.

The exhibition showcases her geometric paintings from the 1960s to the 1970s.

Her abstract work from the 2000s and 2010s is also featured at the exhibition, which includes artworks dedicated to her homeland Palestine such as the 'Jerusalem, My Home Painting' (2014).

The exhibition also features artwork from Halaby's 'Women of Palestine Series', 2007.

The museum's exhibition also showcases Halaby's 'Rebirth of Palestine from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River', 2013.

In parallel with her abstract work, the exhibition also displays her pencil pictures of the Kafr Qassem massacre that happened in Palestine in 1956.

The series also includes paintings of olive trees in Palestine that were uprooted, which had negative economic consequences for the Palestinian people.

The exhibition also features a painting dedicated to Palestinian author Ghassan Kanafani.

Halaby's work sheds light on the plight of the Palestinian people and celebrates the cultural heritage of Palestine.
