Sharjah Toddler Death Case: Neighbors Released on Bail

The families of two young Indian girls, who were detained in connection with the tragic death of a two-year-old Pakistani toddler in Sharjah, have been released on bail, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation.

Advocate Preeta Sriram Madav, representing the families, confirmed the release on Tuesday. "The families of both girls were released on bail," Madav stated. "Now the investigations and court proceedings will continue as per the local law."

The tragedy occurred last month in a residential tower where the three families lived as neighbors. The incident involved a two-year-old boy who fell to his death from a staircase area on an upper floor of the building.

Initially, it was believed the toddler had wandered out of his family's apartment and fallen through an opening near the stairs. However, subsequent investigations revealed a different sequence of events. According to Advocate Madav, CCTV footage captured the two young girls—one from each Indian family—playing with the toddler moments before the accident.

Following the discovery of the footage, Sharjah Police took both families into custody for questioning. The families, hailing from the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, were held as authorities sought to understand the circumstances surrounding the fall.

UAE child protection laws place strict responsibilities on parents, guardians, and property operators to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children. Authorities are currently reviewing whether existing safeguards in the building met the required standards.

A senior Sharjah Police official emphasized that the case remains under active investigation. "All legal procedures are being followed with child protection authorities and the public prosecution," the official said. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and inspecting the building layout to determine exactly how the child accessed the restricted staircase area.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the residential community, prompting many parents to reassess safety measures within the building.

Family members have described the event as a devastating tragedy that unfolded in seconds. A relative of the deceased child noted that the mother had reportedly left the toddler unattended for just a few minutes before the accident occurred. "It happened so fast," the relative said.

As the legal process moves forward with the families out on bail, the focus remains on the thorough investigation to determine liability and prevent future tragedies in shared residential spaces.
