Speaking at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors meeting, Abdullah Balala, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, highlighted the urgent need for stronger international protection of nuclear facilities. This follows the drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant.

The meeting was organized at the request of Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia. It also coincided with a recent visit to the UAE by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

During his statement, Al Balala reaffirmed the UAE’s firm condemnation of any terrorist attacks targeting civilian nuclear infrastructure. He emphasized that these discussions go beyond the UAE incident, focusing on global accountability to safeguard nuclear facilities meant for peaceful use.

Al Balala cautioned that targeting peaceful nuclear sites poses serious risks. He explained such attacks can result in severe humanitarian, environmental, and economic consequences that impact multiple countries. Even if there are no radioactive effects, he stressed, the threat remains critically serious.
