UAE’s 4.5 Day Week has Improved Workers Efficiency

In a significant move to prioritize work-life balance and family time during the summer months, the Dubai government has announced a new flexible working scheme for its public sector employees. The initiative, titled "Our Flexible Summer," introduces a condensed four-day work week model designed to boost employee well-being without compromising institutional performance.

The program, which runs from June 29 to September 10, offers government staff two distinct scheduling options to accommodate their personal needs:

  • Option A: Work seven-hour days from Monday through Thursday, followed by a shortened four-and-a-half-hour day on Friday.
  • Option B: Work eight-hour days from Monday through Thursday, with Friday designated as an additional full day off.

This announcement aligns with broader efforts in the UAE to foster parent-friendly workplaces and encourage fathers to be more present with their families. The initiative builds on a similar scheme introduced last summer, signaling a sustained commitment to evolving the emirate's work culture.

Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director General of the Dubai Government Human Resources Department, emphasized that the flexibility is a strategic investment rather than a concession.

"The 'Our Flexible Summer' initiative has demonstrated that employee well-being and quality of life do not come at the expense of performance," Al Falasi stated. "On the contrary, they are among the key enablers of institutional success and long-term sustainability."

According to Al Falasi, the model reflects a modern government philosophy where investing in talent and quality of life directly enhances productivity, innovation, and sustainable performance. By developing more people-centric environments, Dubai aims to strengthen the future-readiness of its government entities while improving the overall employee experience.

As the summer heat sets in, this shift marks a pivotal step in how Dubai balances operational efficiency with the human element, setting a potential precedent for other sectors and regions looking to redefine the traditional five-day work week.
