A Korean Summer Dessert That’s As Fun As It Is Fresh

Hwachae is not just a fruit bowl—it’s a festive experience in a glass. Traditionally enjoyed during summer festivals in Korea, it combines seasonal fruits with ice, milk, soda, and sometimes ice cream. With its bright colors and refreshing fizz, it's a feel-good dessert you’ll want to make all season long.

Sweet, Colorful Ingredients for the Perfect Hwachae

This version of Hwachae is customizable and flexible—perfect for using up fruits in your fridge. You can mix and match to your taste while keeping the base sweet, juicy, and creamy. From berries to melon, every bite delivers a burst of summer flavor.

  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 3 cups watermelon cubes
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • ½ cup raspberries
  • 3 cups mixed fruit of your choice (e.g., ½ cup sliced strawberries, ½ cup blueberries, ½ cup raspberries, 2 diced mangoes, 1 diced banana)
  • Optional fruits: pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew, kiwi
  • 1 cup jelly (e.g., sakura jelly using Chinese jelly powder, or any store-bought jelly)
  • ¼ cup popping boba (optional: swap with crystal boba or coconut jelly)
  • 1½ cups lemon-lime soda (such as Sprite)
  • 1¾ cups Pink Drink (use bottled or substitute with strawberry milk)
  • ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk (or honey to taste)
  • ½ cup vanilla ice cream (optional but highly recommended)

Mix, Chill, and Sip – How to Make Hwachae at Home

Making Hwachae is as easy as layering and stirring. This no-cook dessert is perfect for last-minute get-togethers or a solo evening treat. You can make it ahead or assemble it fresh—either way, it comes together in minutes.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the ice cubes to chill the base.
  2. Toss in the watermelon cubes, blueberries, raspberries, and any other prepared fruit of your choice. The more colorful and varied, the better.
  3. Add the jelly and popping boba, letting them scatter throughout for surprise texture and flavor in every scoop.
  4. Pour in the lemon-lime soda and the Pink Drink. This adds that signature Hwachae fizz and rosy color.
  5. Drizzle in the sweetened condensed milk (or honey) and stir everything together gently to avoid breaking the fruits.
  6. If using, top with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream for a creamy twist.
  7. Serve immediately with a ladle or large spoon into individual bowls or cups. Make sure each serving gets a little of everything!

Hwachae is more than just a fruit punch—it’s a summer celebration in a bowl. Sweet, fizzy, and full of texture, this Korean favorite brings joy with every bite. Whether you serve it at a party or enjoy it as a personal pick-me-up, Hwachae is bound to become a warm-weather staple.
