Heroic Teen's Sacrifice: Saving Sister from Strong Currents

A 13-year-old Emirati boy tragically drowned in Ras Al Khaimah while attempting to save his younger sister and two cousins from strong sea currents. The incident occurred around 5pm on Tuesday, April 14.

The teenager, Mohammed Ahmed bin Amer Al Shehhi, had gone to the beach with his extended family, including several young children. His father said the children had been playing near the shore when sudden waves and strong currents pulled some of them further into the sea.

Mohammed, the eldest among the children, had earlier moved away from the water after noticing the worsening sea conditions. However, when he saw his seven-year-old sister and two cousins, aged eight and nine, being dragged further into the water by the currents, he rushed back into the sea to rescue them.

His father recounted that Mohammed successfully pulled his younger sister to safety. Although she was found unconscious after reportedly swallowing large amounts of seawater, she showed signs of recovery upon being revived and her condition later stabilized.

During the rescue effort, Mohammed became exhausted and swallowed a significant amount of seawater. Relatives said he lost strength before he could make it back to the shore. According to his father, Mohammed showed faint signs of life when rescue teams arrived but passed away before he could be taken to the hospital.

Emergency teams were alerted and rushed to the scene shortly after the incident. All three children Mohammed rescued survived, including his sister, who has since been discharged from the hospital.

Grief and Calls for Safety Measures

Speaking about his son, Mohammed’s father described him as a caring and protective boy who had a close bond with his siblings. “He was like an elder brother to everyone, always taking care of them. He used to take them to the grocery store and buy them sweets,” he said.

He added that Mohammed was a polite, kind-hearted, and responsible boy who was deeply caring towards his younger sister. The father also said his daughter has been deeply affected by the incident and feels responsible for her brother’s death.

In light of the tragedy, Mohammed’s father called on authorities to install additional safety measures at the beach where the incident occurred to prevent future accidents.
