Sharjah Announces Series of Road Projects to Ease Dubai Traffic
Sharjah unveils a Dh750 million road and tunnel project to ease chronic traffic congestion on commuter routes to Dubai.

In a major move to address chronic congestion on the UAE's most heavily trafficked commuter routes, Sharjah has announced an ambitious Dh750 million infrastructure program designed to streamline connectivity between the emirate and its neighbor, Dubai. The initiative, unveiled by Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, centers on constructing new tunnels and roads to create faster, more efficient corridors for the region's growing population.
The centerpiece of this comprehensive development plan is the construction of a new underground tunnel beneath Al Taawun Road. Currently one of the busiest arteries linking the two emirates, Al Taawun has long struggled with bottlenecks that delay thousands of daily commuters. The proposed dual-carriageway tunnel will run beneath the existing surface network, connecting directly toward Dubai via the Al Nahda Bridge. By diverting significant through-traffic underground, the project aims to drastically reduce gridlock at the notorious Al Taawun Roundabout and improve flow for local surface traffic.
Complementing the tunnel is the development of Noor Road, a strategic new route extending from Al Orooba Street into Dubai, also utilizing the Al Nahda Bridge crossing. This new corridor is intended to provide motorists with a vital alternative entry point, relieving pressure on existing routes. Sheikh Dr. Sultan confirmed that Noor Road is scheduled to open by the end of 2026, offering immediate relief to residents navigating between Sharjah's residential zones and Dubai's commercial districts.
Beyond merely adding lanes, the upgrades are designed to integrate seamlessly with the UAE's broader highway network. The new infrastructure will facilitate better access to Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311), allowing for quicker travel to destinations across the country. Furthermore, the project includes specific improvements to access the Expo Centre Sharjah, featuring dedicated directional signage to guide visitors directly to the venue and its parking facilities, enhancing the emirate's profile as a global exhibition hub.
"We are opening these internal areas to our neighbours," Sheikh Dr. Sultan stated, emphasizing that the objective extends beyond simple traffic management. He described the initiative as creating a "new level of openness" for Sharjah, reinforcing its identity as a welcoming destination for both residents and visitors.
While a final completion date for the complex Al Taawun tunnel project remains to be announced, the Ruler expressed confidence that the Dh750 million investment would yield substantial long-term benefits. For the daily commuter, the impact promises to be transformative: reduced travel times, fewer stops at congested intersections, and a more reliable journey between the twin emirates. As the region continues to urbanize, these projects mark a critical step in ensuring the infrastructure keeps pace with the needs of the community.
